Remember playing on Excessive Overkill servers in 2004? Those were wild times. I’m bringing it back.
What is Excessive Overkill?
Created by Dan “Mr. Pants” Schoenblum, Excessive Overkill was a Quake III Arena mod that turned everything up to 11:
- Excessified Weapons: Everything is ridiculously overpowered
- Flying Mode: Jump repeatedly to fly around maps
- Regenerating Health: Never run out, never stop fighting
- Grappling Hook: Swing around like Spider-Man
- Death Explosions: You explode when you die!
Modernizing a Classic
The original mod was released in 2004. I’ve integrated it with ioquake3 (the modern Quake 3 engine) and added:
- Automated Builds: GitHub Actions creates binaries for all platforms
- Modern CMake: Clean build system
- WebAssembly Support: Planning browser-based play
- Cross-Platform: macOS, Windows, Linux, and soon web
How It Works
The mod is built directly into the engine - just launch and play:
# macOS
brew tap samifouad/overkill
brew install overkill
# Or download from GitHub Actions
Open Source Revival
This is a labor of love - preserving a piece of gaming history while making it accessible to modern players. All the code is on GitHub, builds are automated, and anyone can contribute.
The goal is to capture that 2004 chaos in a package that works on today’s systems. No server hunting, no config hell - just pure excessive gameplay.
If you played Excessive back in the day, come check it out. The rockets still explode just as violently as you remember.
